10/3/12:  UPDATED FOR 2012-2013 SEASON

Guidelines 2012-2013 and Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Fees

The cost for all 4th – 8th graders to participate in the Willmar Basketball Boosters’ traveling basketball program is $130.00 per player. This fee includes a reversible red/white basketball jersey and matching shorts plus tournament registration for up to four (4) tournaments including our own Willmar tournament.  If the registration fee is a hardship for a player, that player should contact a board member concerning scholarships which may be available on a limited basis to reduce the player’s fee.  Note:  Parents are responsible for any additional costs related to participation in the program, such as travel, lodging, meals, etc.  Teams may pursue additional tournaments, if team members agree, at their own expense.

2.  Uniforms and Equipment

Participants will receive their jersey and shorts upon selection to a team, completion of registration and medical forms and waivers, and payment of program fee.  Each player must furnish all necessary equipment/clothing, including shoes.  Each team will receive a minimum of 3 basketballs for use by the team.  Basketballs must be returned at the end of the season.

3.  Team Players

Teams will be comprised of only Willmar School District (and private Willmar schools) players per open enrollment.  Players must play with their own grade level; no players will be allowed to play a grade level higher unless a team lacks sufficient number of players.   Players will practice together as a grade regardless of how many teams that grade has.

4.  Team Make-Up

               4th grade             2-4 balanced teams

               5th grade             2-4 balanced teams

               6th grade              2-4 balanced teams

7th grade              2-3 teams – A/B structure (red team, white team)

8th grade              2-3 teams – A/B structure (red team, white team)

Teams shall be determined after the first several practices or a specified tryout date. If a player is unable to attend the scheduled tryouts, an alternate tryout should be arranged in advance with the coach and/or tryout coordinator.  Tryouts will be conducted by the coaches.  With balanced teams, teams should be selected with equality in mind (teams should have talent distributed equally among the teams).  It is recommended that balanced teams are used for league play.  With A/B teams, players are selected upon tryouts per A/B make-up with discretion (not necessarily top 10/second 10).  Additional teams may be formed through the Booster program depending upon availability of coaches, gym space, practice time, and tournaments.  Every attempt will be given to maximize individual participation in the program.

5.  Team Size

Recommended team size is 10 players, or a minimum of 8 or maximum of 12.  Team sizes will largely be determined by participation levels. If a team has more than 10 players, it has worked well in the past to break the team into small groups and rotate the groups attending each tournament.  EXAMPLE:  Willmar Red has 12 players and they are divided into 3 groups:  X, Y, and Z. For the 1st tourney, X&Y go; 2nd tourney Y&Z go; 3rd tourney X&Z go.  Each player on the team should get 4 tourneys.

6.  Team Liaison

Each team will have one parent who will serve as team liaison to aid communication of information between coaches and players.  The team liaison will also be the contact for apparel orders and attend all Willmar Basketball Booster board meetings, as a representative of his/her team.

7.  Playing Time

Suggested playing time is no less than 25% playing time per player per tournament.  Playing time may not be the same for every player.

8.  Practice Time

Practice time may vary with ages of participants, ability levels, other programs, etc.  Coaches should coordinate gym time and practice schedules with the gym facilitator at the beginning of the season. The gym facilitator for 2012-13 is Stephanie Slagter.

9.  Leagues and Tournaments

Willmar Basketball Boosters will pay the entrance fee for each team, up to a maximum of four (4) tournaments including our own Willmar tournament, to be selected by the coach(es).  Teams may enter additional tournaments at their own expense; however, the additional tournaments must be discussed with all parents and approved by a majority of parents and coaches prior to tournament scheduling.  It is recommended that no more than one tournament be scheduled beyond a 90-minute (drivable) radius of Willmar.  Front/back court league play hosted by Willmar will count as one tournament.

At the conclusion of the regular tournament schedule, coaches may elect to compose a “selected” traveling team for purposes of state qualifiers, Pacesetter tournaments, etc.   These traveling teams shall be considered an extension of the Booster season and shall follow all guidelines set forth herein.

10.  Sportsmanship Agreement

Each parent, coach and participant shall sign a Sportsmanship Agreement before participating.  Violations of this agreement may result in expulsion from the program and loss of entry fee.
